Thank you so very much Ms. Thomas for sharing this Bay Area Black Movement through Yoga with us on your fabulous new website! My name is Ivanna Woods and I too am moving along with this wave and am constantly encouraging my brothas and sistas to come to classes with me. I’m about to embark on my Teacher’s Training at Yogaworks in Walnut Creek and intend on opening my own yoga studio within the next 6 years. It’s a grand goal of mine and I can’t wait to actualize this dream. Thank you for calling awareness to this beautiful practice. Namaste.

Hello and thank you, Nikki for for sharing information on the BYM (Black Yoga Movement). I have been practicing a style of Chinese martial arts for nearly 30 years, and Taoist yoga is greatly incorporated within the practice. As a matter of fact, this form of yoga is the foundation for cultivating, circulating, and concentrating one’s chi (internal energy or life energy). Hence, with this form of yoga, the primary principle is breathe control. Through this breathe control, the practitioner’s life energy becomes strong and vibrant; the mind is placid and relaxed; the heart is peaceful and steady; the body is healthy and strong; movements are direct and precise. Stillness is its source of it’s movements, and all fullness returns emptiness. Through this form yoga, one learns to garner strength from weakness; speed from slowness, movement from stillness, loftiness from lowliness. One learns to conquer oneself. As the sage, Lao Tzu, wrote in his book, Tao De Ching, “One who conquers others is strong, but one who conquers oneself is mighty”. I hope this provides you a little bit of insight into Taoist yoga. Again, thank you for sharing this information and video on BYM.

    Peace and blessings,

    DWR
